How Much do you pay for referrals?

I don't pay for referrals.

For the simple reason that if you are referring me to a friend, relative, colleague, client I want you to do so with the proper intention, not because you get something out of it.

I refer businesses all the time, my only request is simple - look after them and don't make me look bad. If someone I refer doesn't look after a client I will be very unlikely to refer them again, its simple.

I once had a mortgage broker call me and offer to send all their clients to me for the low price of $50 per referral, I said no. Plain and simple, I didn't entertain the conversation further - I don't want this work. If you need a reward for helping out a client by referring them to a different business - I don't want to work with you.

The problem I have is to be honest I would have to do one of two things

(1) Tell the client I have paid someone to get the referral, or

(2) Lie and say there was no money paid

Either way I wouldn't feel good about the situation, so I don't do it.

If someone is referring you to another business it might be a good idea to ask the question: Do you get paid for referring me to them?
